United Nations warning: Climate collapse has begun!

According to the website of the German newspaper "Business Daily" on September 6, 2023, the United Nations Secretary General recently issued a warning that "climate collapse has begun.".

2023 is already considered a year with frequent occurrence of extreme weather events. The World Meteorological Organization has now announced that June, July, and August 2023 will be the hottest months on record, respectively.

Meteorological data shows that among the months with the highest global average temperature since 1940, the past three months have all ranked in the top eight in history. June this year is the eighth hottest month measured so far, August is the second hottest month, and July is the hottest month in history. The average temperature throughout the year is likely to exceed previous years. So far, 2023 is still the second hottest year. However, compared to the record breaking same period in 2016, the difference is only 0.01 degrees Celsius.

These news prompted UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to call this summer "the hottest summer on record". He issued an alarm: "Climate collapse has begun." In response to the uncontrolled consumption of oil, coal, and other fossil fuels, the United Nations Secretary General said that humanity can still prevent the worst from happening. He said that change is urgent.

The data released by the World Meteorological Organization comes from the Copernicus Climate Change Service of the European Union. The director of the bureau, Carlo Bountenberg, warned, "What we are observing are the obvious consequences of climate change: not only new extreme situations, but also the continuation of these record breaking phenomena and their impact on humanity and the Earth."

Other results from the Copernican Climate Change Service are also concerning: the average sea surface temperature in August 2023 was 20.98 degrees Celsius, setting a record high. The daily global sea surface average temperature in August is higher than the historical highest value in March 2016.

The range of Antarctic sea ice is still at its lowest historical level during this season. The monthly value is 12% lower than the average level. The World Meteorological Organization stated that this is the lowest level recorded in August since satellite observations began in the late 1970s. On the other hand, the Arctic sea ice range is 10% lower than the average level, but still far above the lowest record set in August 2012.

"The scientific evidence is overwhelming," said Samantha Burgess, Deputy Director of the Copernican Climate Change Service. "Before we stop emitting greenhouse gases, we will continue to see more climate records and stronger, more frequent extreme weather events affecting society and ecosystems." Experts are concerned that they must now report the hottest months and years more frequently.

The research findings of the Copernicus Climate Change Service are based on computer-generated analyses that utilize billions of measurement data from satellites, ships, aircraft, and meteorological stations around the world. In addition, climate researchers can reconstruct historical climates based on tree rings, glaciers, and bubbles in corals.
